CBN: The Assisted Suicide Bills That Have Opponents Up In Arms
This year, 15 states are considering laws legalizing assisted suicide, but bills in two states have some patients-rights advocates especially worried. In New Mexico, the "End of Life Options Act" (House Bill 171) would allow medical professionals to diagnose a terminal illness and provide life-ending medication on the same day, with no second opinion required. In Hawaii, Senate Bill 357 does not require a second opinion........
Times of Israel: Archaeologists To Break Ground at Biblical Site Where Ark of the Covenant Stood
One of the few remaining unstudied major biblical sites, where according to the Bible the Ark of the Covenant was kept for two decades, will be excavated by archaeologists this summer for the first time. Organizers hope the anticipated study of Kiryat Ye’arim (also transliterated as Kiriath Jearim) will shed light on the site’s significance during the Iron Age, the period associated with the biblical account of King David.....
TGC: No Bibles In Iowa—The Curious Case of Cedar Rapids
Every year, the American Bible Society and Barna Group rank 100 of the nation’s most Bible-minded cities—that is, how many people read the Bible at least once a week and who strongly believe the Bible is accurate. And every year, cities from the Bible Belt come in first, while cities from the coasts—San Francisco or Boston or Albany—come in last. It’s all fairly predictable, except for one city: Cedar Rapids, Iowa.....
Schneider: The Shallow Psychology and Theology of Christian Music
....Just look at this list of the top 10 Christian hits of 2015.  There are really only two plots: either the sense of overcoming a certain vague struggle and being strengthened by God through it; or God is great and close to me and I’m a Christian. All of them include similar terminology, phraseology and even musical chords....
Tim Challies: The Five Tests of False Doctrine
....No wonder, then, that John tells us to “test the spirits” and Paul says, “test everything." It is our sacred responsibility to examine every doctrine to determine if it is true or false. But how can we distinguish sound doctrine from false? How can we distinguish teachers of truth from teachers of error? ..

Logos Academic Blog: Parchments Found at New Dead Sea Scrolls Cave
The last Dead Sea Scrolls cave, linked to the ruins on the marl shelf at the mouth of Wadi Qumran, was discovered in 1956, bringing the total number of caves to eleven — eleven caves containing the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, ceramic jars, and a number of other artifacts. For sixty years archaeologists and looters have been searching for a twelfth cave. Would another one ever be found? Most didn’t think so. This is what makes the announcement from Hebrew University so astounding: A twelfth cave has been discovered!....
Bruce Bawer: Gays In the Era of Trump
....Some gays still think the left has their back. When Obama left office, gays flooded You Tube and Twitter with messages thanking him for gay marriage – which he'd had absolutely nothing to do with (and which he, like Hillary, had in fact opposed for most of his administration). On November 8, gay Americans, buying into the entirely baseless premise that Hillary gives a damn about them, voted overwhelmingly for her – a woman whose family foundation has banked millions from Oman, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates, all of which imprison gays, and Saudi Arabia, which executes them.....
Ian Carmichael: The Danger of Christian Sluggishness
....If we honestly believe that if we are hearing God’s voice today through the preaching of his Word, surely our response as listeners should be like Samuel’s “Speak, for your servant hears” (1 Sam 3:10) rather than “Hey, Lord, nice to hear from you, but I can only spare you 15-20 minutes...”....

Thom Rainer: Five Reasons the 11:00 AM Sunday Worship Services Are Disappearing
I wish I knew the specific reason most churches offered an 11:00 AM service on Sunday for decades. The possible theories are many, but none have been substantiated with historical research. The most plausible is the agrarian theory. That perspective holds that churches accommodated the farmers in the community. The farmers had multiple chores that had to be done in the morning. They would get the chores done and then go to church. They often followed the single service with a potluck meal on the grounds. But the 11:00 AM service is disappearing. Rather than spend time trying to discover the origin of the 11:00 AM service, I decided to ask several church leaders why they discontinued the service in their churches. Five common themes emerged...
The Biblical Infidelity Of Progressive Christians
....There is a reason that liberal Christian movements like those championed by Jim Wallis, Rachel Held Evans, Shane Claiborne and others are so ineffective and unpersuasive in American culture.  Rather than seeking to glorify and build the Kingdom of God, they regularly appropriate the language of Scripture to advocate for earthly, largely political causes that never address the principal need of humanity: redemption from sin....

DeVos's Faith Stands Out in Midst of Fierce Senate Vote
...In the midst of a huge political battle, many believers have noticed that DeVos is a committed Christian who prioritizes her faith.  Rev. Robert Sirico, the founder of the Grand Rapids-based Acton Institute and a long-time DeVos family friend, describes her as a "solid evangelical Christian" who is active in her church and "orthodox in her beliefs and personal commitment to Jesus Christ."....
Gary Smith: What Are We to Make of President Trump's Faith?
....So, three weeks into his already tumultuous presidency, what can we learn about Trump’s faith from his remarks at the breakfast? Trump spoke briefly about his religious background. “I was blessed,” he asserted, “to be raised in a churched home.” Trump swore his inaugural oath on the Bible his mother used to teach him when he was a child, and he insisted that “faith lives on in my heart every single day.” ....
Prophecy News Watch: Canadian Government Preparing To Silence Anyone Who Criticizes Islam
The Canadian Parliament is now ready to debate whether to condemn "Islamophobia" or to develop a whole-government approach to reducing or eliminating Islamophobia through force of law.  This anti-blasphemy law exclusively for Islam, which began with an online petition, has gained momentum and will go to a vote on February 16.....

Stetzer: Are You on Track if You Lead a Church of Less Than 100?
Every church leader or pastor desires ministry to be fruitful and to influence their community. But we need to be reminded that we can no longer depend on the success of the past to be the shelter of our future. While leadership is important, a church’s size can change frequently, depending upon other factors like changing demographics of the community or cultural shifts. ....
Tim Challies: The Hidden Beauty of a Bad Sermon
....Young preachers, new preachers, preach bad sermons. They preach bad sermons as they learn to preach good sermons. And in some ways, those bad sermons serve as a mark of a church’s health and strength because they prove that the church is fulfilling its mandate to raise up the next generation of preachers and the one after that.  .
Christianity Today: Why It Took Five Years to Give Away This Free Christian College Campus

Daily Signal: It’s Time to Restore Free Speech to American Churches
For more than 60 years, the federal government has been sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong, threatening to punish houses of worship and their leaders for what they say. The Free Speech Fairness Act was introduced in Congress earlier this week and, if enacted, would go a long way toward ending that. Ever since 1954, when Congress enacted the Johnson Amendment, the IRS has been telling churches that it has the power to monitor their speech.....
Daily Wire: Democrats Say Christianity Is as Violent as Islam, But Seven Facts Prove Them Wrong
According to a new CBS poll, only one in seven Democrats believe that Islam is more violent than Christianity. In sharp contrast, six in ten Republicans believe that Islam is more violent. So, are Democrats delusional? The short answer is yes. It’s quite frankly absurd that this has become a topic of debate. Any human being capable of common sense should be able to discern the stark difference between the two monotheistic faiths. Here are seven facts......

Michael Brown: Trump and PencePlease Reconsider Your LGBT Strategy
....Mr. President, I truly believe that you desire to stand with LGBT Americans and you do not want to see them hurt or attacked by others, and I second your sentiments wholeheartedly. At the same time, the legislation you signed will potentially punish conservative Christians and others for simply living out their faith. Not only so, but I believe you will soon learn that there is no appeasing LGBT activists and that as long as you demonstrate loyalty to your conservative Christian base, you will be considered their enemy.....

CBN News: 'Regulation Law' Legalizes Jewish Property in Judea and Samaria
Reaction to the Knesset's passage of the 'regulation law' retroactively legalizing Jewish communities in Israel's biblical heartland is, not surprisingly, along ideological lines. The law shields Jewish towns, built in good faith with the government's backing, which were later claimed to be on "private Palestinian land," according to laws issued by Jordan during its 19-year occupation of Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem.......

H.B. Charles, Jr.: What Is Biblical Preaching? Driving the Sermon
What is biblical preaching? This is an important question, make no mistake. But maybe a better one is: What is driving the sermon? When I listen to a sermon, this is the question I’m most concerned with. I care about how a preacher exposits the text, but I’m not listening for that as much as I am listening to see what is at the heart of the message—the driving force behind it. I’ve heard some messages in which it sometimes seems like an illustration is driving the sermon and it just happens to.....

NASCAR’s Faith: The Rise of Cultural Christianity Through Sport
During the first televised flag-to-flag NASCAR Sprint Cup event in 1979, CBS agreed for the first time to package an invocation, national anthem, and command to start the engines. The decision to combine the opening activities proved important to both NASCAR and the network...The network then decided that all future broadcasts...would include the invocation. Today, NASCAR’s three major divisions are the only national sporting events to televise the invocation. While often generic in tone and content, many are deliberately evangelical. Preachers, however, have not always supported automobile racing....
Birth Control Leader Margaret Sanger: Darwinist, Racist and Eugenicist
Margaret Sanger was the founder of Planned Parenthood, the leading organization advocating abortion in the United States today. Darwinism had a profound influence on her thinking, including her conversion to, and active support of, eugenics. She was specifically concerned with reducing the population of the ‘less fit’, including ‘inferior races’ such as ‘Negroes’. One major result of her lifelong work was to support the sexual revolution that has radically changed our society.....
Do Atheists Count as a Religious Group?
Here's a question for you, dear readers: Would you consider atheists a religious group?  My first thought: Nope.  I mean, how could people who — by definition — deny the existence of a supreme being or beings be described as religious? This is the related entry in the Associated Press Stylebook, "the journalist's bible":
agnostic, atheist--An agnostic is a person who believes it is impossible to know whether there is a God.  An atheist is a person who believes there is no God.  So what sparks my question?....

Breitbart: British Street Preacher Locked Up, Charged with
Hate Crime for Quoting Bible to Gay Teen
A Christian street preacher was locked up and charged with a hate crime for quoting from the Book of Genesis in response to a gay teenager’s questions on how God views homosexuals.  Gordon Larmour, 42, spent a night in custody and faced a six-month ordeal over the charges before they were finally thrown out in a hearing last month.  The father-of-one, who has been street preaching for seven years following his conversion to Christianity, was handing out leaflets in his home town of Irvine, Ayrshire, last June when a group of young men passed him, The Telegraph has reported.  He told the men: “Don’t forget Jesus loves you and He died for your sins.” One asked Mr. Larmour, “What does your God say about homosexuals?” He responded by referring to the Book of Genesis, stating that God had created Adam and Eve to produce children. The two men argued and Mr. Larmour claims that he was chased by.....

The Hill: Trump Delivers for Religious Right
Religious conservatives’ gamble on President Trump is paying off.  The last several days have brought a slew of victories for evangelicals, many of whom set aside their reservations about Trump to back him during the presidential campaign. From the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court to Trump’s affirmation of support for allowing tax-exempt churches to engage in politics to the appointment of Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. to an education task force, evangelicals are seeing the new president quickly deliver on a number of fronts. ....

Slate: How Trump Is Warping Christianity for His Own Gain
....To Trump, Christians are a curious sect (“such nice religious people,” they “have that great religious feel”), and the Bible is a foreign text (“2 Corinthians”). At a closed-door meeting of conservative evangelicals last summer, Trump said he wanted to get America back to the days when going to Sunday school was “automatic.” He understands rote observance, not belief. Lacking a sense of God, Trump focuses on his usual object of worship: himself....
NAIJ: The Extravagant Lifestyles of Nigerian Pastors
....Many Nigerian pastors have invested heavily in the church business and are reaping bountifully from gullible Nigerians who have idolized the pastors. In the past, pastors were meant to live modest lives that would touch the hardened criminal and bring him to God.
Instead, most of the church owners preach prosperity and do everything to look the part. Churches have been rechristened to soothe the needs of the founders and administrators who dress stylishly and believe in the acquisition of material wealth. ....
Christianity Today: Evangelism in a Post-Truth World
...Christians know Jesus as the way, truth, and life, but culture asks us to capitulate and live as “law-abiding” citizens in a new post-truth world. USA Today: Conspiring To Stifle Free Speech Is a Crime: Glenn Reynolds
They told me if Donald Trump were elected, voices of dissent would be shut down by fascist mobs. And they were right! Protesters threw commercial fireworks at police.....
Sam Rainer:Nine Questions to Ask Before Visiting Someone In the Hospital
Visiting people in the hospital is difficult. It’s tough when church members struggle in physical weakness. However, some of my most fruitful ministry has occurred in hospital rooms. When I started pastoring, I didn’t think much about the strategy of a hospital visit. I just went. In most cases, a simple ministry of presence is the key. However, there are some strategic questions to ask before visiting someone in the hospital. ...
Eric Geiger: Six Types of 'Dangerous Charisma'

We have seen leaders known for their charisma lead people in horrific directions or crumble because their own inner health was woefully inconsistent with their external persona...
Thomas Overmiller: Do You Wrestle with This Temptation?
God is always good to his people, all the time. That’s what David affirms in Psalm 73:1. But in doing so, he makes an honest admission. Can you relate? He had been jealous of ungodly people (Psalm 73:2-3). His jealousy centered on their material prosperity and sinful indulgence, free from obvious consequences (Psalm 73:4-12). ...
Layton Talbert: The Synonyms for the Word of God
Word, laws, testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, judgments-have you ever read passages in the Old Testament and wondered what the difference is between all these words for Scripture? Aren’t they just flowery, poetic ways of referring to the Bible with a variety of terms to avoid sounding redundant? ..

Tim Challies: How Much Entertainment Is Too Much?
We must be the most entertained generation in all of human history. We take entertainment as our inalienable right. If we work hard during the day, we assume we have earned a few hours of amusement at night. Actually, we can’t even make it through the day without at least a few distractions—a couple of web sites in the morning, some quick YouTube videos at lunch, sports radio on the drive home. Weekends are for sports,  for kicking back...The choices are endless and our commitment near-total. It is good for us to consider the place of entertainment in the Christian life. What is its purpose? How much is enough? How much is too much?...
Thom Rainer: When the Pastor Has an Affair

Bill Randles: The Effects Of Legal Abortion On Womanhood

Duren: The Sin of the Boring Sermon
....No pastor sets out to be boring, of course, but how many of us set out with a specific intent not to be boring? The opposite of boredom is not the sermonic equivalent of a stand-up routine or an SNL reenactment. Do not think unless the pastor is turning cartwheels or lighting things on fire then the entire congregation is in danger of boredom. Bore- dom happens when the preacher does not engage the gathered listeners, fails to capture their imagination, or otherwise does not present God’s word is a way that holds them and won’t let go.....
Kevin DeYoung: Of Pastors and Politics
....Pastors should be careful not to get swept up in the daily whirlwind of American (or British or Canadian or whatever) politics. Note the words “pastors” and “careful” in the previous sentence. This is not an absolute command or a blanket condemnation. This is a caution specifically for pastors. ....
Dan Delzell: Why Liberal Theology Is Fake News
Given man's propensity to produce inventive stories while fabricating alternative "facts," it was only a matter of time before the 24-hour news cycle became inundated with "fake news." Sadly, we now live in a day where many choose to "tweet first, check the facts later."...
Kelley: Two Reasons Why We Should Keep Using the Word 'Saved'
....There has been, I think, in the last several years, an implicit effort to “update” some of the language of the church. That’s all well and good, I suppose, but the danger in updating language like this is that you start to lose the sense of what words like these are meant to communicate. So at least in this case, I think there are two compelling reasons why we, as Christians, should keep using the word “saved”........

Mark Snoeberger:Christians & the Immigration Crisis— A Few Thoughts
Donald Trump’s stay on admitting certain immigrants has brought out a raft of evangelical critics, especially those who see everything as an immediate gospel issue. Arguing from the facts that (1) God says nice things about foreigners in the Bible (e.g., Lev 19:33–34) and that (2) we have to be nice to foreigners or we’ll never have an audience with them to share the gospel, these express astonishment that a Christian could ever support an immigration ban of any sort. How, we might ask, can the gospel be forwarded if we anger or injure those to whom we are sent with the gospel?....
Christian Converts From Islam Face Beheading In Somalia

Kathryn Jean Lopez: Social Media and the ‘City of God’
“That should keep you busy,” an Amtrak conductor commented as he saw my already-worn copy of St. Augustine’s City of God in front of me shortly after I boarded a train from Baltimore to New York. Reading the 1,000-plus-page classic was not something I had planned for 2017, but Twitter, of all things, drew me into it.....

For more than 100 years, it's been the Boy Scouts. Its purpose was to grow and develop young boys into good men who become great citizens. Chrislam Insanity: Qur'an Readings In The Church That Deny Deity Of Jesus
The Christmas service in Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in Glasgow, Scotland was the cause of no small of controversy when it included a reading of Quranic verses that deny the deity of Christ.  Lest you think that these were read by the Very Rev. Kelvin Holdsworth for their historical or comparative value, video of the service shows the verses being recited in Arabic by a Muslim woman as if she were leading a worship service of Allah in a Mosque (a privilege denied to Muslim women, ironically). The church was bombarded with......
Pulpit & Pen: There’s A Wolf In the House18 Signs of Apostasy
There is a danger that has come into the sheepfold; apostates have come in and they probably have always been here. However, with the prevalence of social media, their influence has spread and it is more important than ever before to recognize the marks of an apostate, a person who at one time knew and maybe even taught the truths of the Bible but walked away or a person who consistently teaches false doctrines to the Church. Jude, the Lord’s youngest human brother, points out several signs of an apostate and I want to draw your attention to them.....
Sierra Club Chief: Abortion Is Key To a ‘Sustainable Population’
The executive director of the environmentalist Sierra Club said that abortion is a critical tool for protecting the environment from the threat of overpopulation. On Thursday, the Sierra Club’s Michael Brune appeared on Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson Tonight to argue for the importance of “reproductive rights” as a means of culling the world’s population and protecting the environment. Brune said that abortion “helps to address the number of the people that we have on this planet. We feel that one of the ways in which we can get to a sustainable population is to empower women to make choices about their own families.”....

Larry Alex Taunton: How a John 3:16 Ad Almost Made It to the Super Bowl
...More than a game, the Super Bowl has become America's largest cultural stage....This got me thinking: If I had thirty seconds to say anything I wanted to an audience numbering more than 100 million, what would I say? In 2011, I put this question to my friends, family, and staff. We concluded we would want to deliver a message of hope. As the executive director of the Fixed Point Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to promoting a Christian perspective on the ideas that shape culture, this appealed to me. What if we could actually do it? So I Called the local Fox affiliate and asked.....
Adam Blosser: Degrees of Separation Over Homosexual Clergy In the SBC
Some among us were recently up in arms over the decision by Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, DC to call a lesbian couple as co-pastors.  The story was even covered by The Washington Post.  When I first read the story at the Baptist News Global site, I shrugged my shoulders.  It wasn’t that I approved of the decision or felt that it was right in any way, but I wasn’t surprised.

Christian Post:Leaked Draft of Trump Executive Order Would Protect Religious Freedom for Gay Marriage, Abortion Opponents
President Donald Trump may issue a "religious freedom" order that would protect Americans' rights to live their lives and run their businesses in accordance with their religious beliefs on marriage and abortion, according to draft order that has been leaked to the press. As social conservative activists are voicing their disapproval over reports that indicate that Trump won't rescind an order signed by President Barack Obama in 2014 that puts religious charities and other federal contractors at risk of losing federal grants because their employment practices are consistent with their religious views on marriage and sexuality, a draft of a potential executive order that began circulating through the administration on Tuesday indicates that Trump could move to protect organizational and individual religious convictions on social issues....

Here are seven of them you will find carrying out their deceptive, destructive work in the church today.....
Bud Steadman: God’s Answer to Tormenting Fear
Fear is perhaps the oldest negative human emotion, based on the experience of our first parents in Genesis 3:10. From the moment Adam and Eve separated themselves from their Creator through an act of disobedience, man has been haunted by fear. While there is a righteous fear of God that leads to blessing, the Bible likewise speaks of an unrighteous fear relating to life, a fear that torments the person who possesses it. ....

Michael Brown: Who Are the Real Bible-Quoting Hypocrites?
One of the sharpest criticisms that comes against Bible-quoting, conservative Christians is that we are hypocrites, failing to live by the very book that we so zealously quote. Sadly, that criticism is often true.  To give just one example, no-fault, heterosexual divorce in the evangelical church has done more to undermine marriage than all gay activists combined. But we conservative believers hardly have a monopoly on hypocrisy. To the contrary, the Bible- quoting hypocrisy of the liberal left is far more galling than our conservative Christian hypocrisy...

Of all things to read, why read the news? C. S. Lewis asked this question...He described the person who reads only the news as “the most unliterary reader of all,” one step below the reader of the “lowest kinds of fiction." ...Lewis is onto something here. I hope you don’t cut the news entirely out of your reading diet. But Lewis’s words point to the fact that it’s wise for us to consider how we read the news. Here are five biblically based principles for Christians to keep in mind when engaging with the media.....
Kevin DeYoung: Seven Ways to Do Political Punditry Wrong in a Polarized World
It’s all political. All the time. At least that’s what it feels like. Whether you voted for Trump or loathe him with every last bit of plasma in every drop of blood in your body, it seems like the promise of “moving past this contentious election season,” is not going to materialize....What are we to do as Christians when there is so much we might want to say, and yet, we’d like to say it in a way that makes a difference instead of just making noise?...
Nicholas T. Batzig: Jesus Loves the Rich
Many people have a conception of Jesus that is–to put it as bluntly as possible– substantively deficient. Many envision Jesus as the prototypical religious leader who only cared for the outcast, the socially marginalized, the sick and the poor. A Marxist, revolutionary Jesus is the inevitable production of such a truncated conception...But the Jesus of Scripture never showed partiality to the poor as over agains the rich. The Jesus of Scripture came into the world to redeem rich and poor. ....

In his grief over the death of a justice he deeply admired and emulated, Judge Gorsuch could hardly have imagined the series of events that would lead to his being selected today to fill the Scalia vacancy. The Stream: It’s Gorsuch! Donald Trump Picks Stalwart Conservative to Replace Antonin Scalia on SCOTUS
....Gorsuch said in a speech last spring that he has tried to follow the lead of Scalia. Like Scalia, Gorsuch also adheres to the conservative legal tenet of textualism, meaning he only considers the language of a law being reviewed, not legislative intent or the consequences of the law. While Gorsuch was confirmed to the appellate court by the Senate without opposition in 2006, and rated “unanimously qualified” by the American Bar Association at the time, he has since authored several opinions that will engender Democratic opposition to his nomination...

Westminster Seminary: A Pastor’s Reflections— Demon Possession and Mental Illness
I can remember sitting in church as a young teenager as my pastor posed a question about the possible links between demon possession and mental illness. His brother-in-law was a board certified psychiatrist and a professing Christian, which lead him to pose the following question: “What if I told you I was counseling someone who spoke in multiple different voices, was violent, prone to hurting others, and disposed to harming others? How would you diagnose such a person?....

Tim Challies: False Teachers and Deadly Doctrines
For the past few years, lists of Christian bestsellers have been topped by a book claiming fresh revelation from Jesus Christ. Before that, they were overrun by books describing people’s purported visits to heaven. And before the heaven tourism fad, there was the best-selling novel that reframed the doctrine of the Trinity. Meanwhile, the largest church in America is led by a man whose platitudes are indistinguishable from fortune cookies. But it’s not just authors and church leaders who are swerving away from the truth. ..

A set of identical twins kept each other alive by holding hands in the womb. Hayley Lampshire, 27, from Kidlington, Oxfordshire, discovered her twins were suffering from a rare condition meaning they shared one amniotic sac, instead of having one each. That mean that if the babies moved around in the womb doctors warned their umbilical cords could become tangled, starving them, or even strangling each other.
