Today, church leaders and pastors use social media to reach countless people with the Gospel. But can social media sometimes do more harm than good? American pastor and author Ed Stetzer writes in Christianity Today that there are three main ways pastors and church leaders undermine themselves on social media. The first way is by trying to become famous.  "Some pastors and church leaders do nothing on social media but try to make themselves look more influential than they actually are," he writes. "The most common way pastors and church leaders try to make themselves look more influential than they actually are is by purchasing Twitter followers or Facebook likes."  LINK
National Geographic: Jerusalem Find May Have Been Ancient Music Hall
What can an unfinished Roman theater tell us about a tumultuous period in ancient Jerusalem? Quite a lot, say archaeologists.  The Israeli Antiquities Authority recently chipped away at understanding the region's distant past by announcing this week that recent excavations uncovered the remains of what they believe was once a small theater or public space. The discovery was made as archaeologists were excavating parts of the Western Wall, one of the most revered structures in the Jewish faith. The ancient wall encases what the Jewish people refer to as the Temple Mount and what Muslims refer to as Haram esh-Sharif. Today, the religious site has major significance for Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths.     LINK

Aaron Earls: Do Christians Have to Care About Everything?
Why don’t you care? In our age of perpetual outrage, that may be one of the most commonly asked questions. After all, the list of needs and worthy causes are unending. Should we not be expected to voice impassioned concern for every problem and enthusiastic support for every good cause? Even more than that, why would we not be constantly, actively, publicly doing something, doing anything, doing everything to bring all the good goals to pass? LINK
CBN News: 'Our Rights Come from God'  —Judge Upholds Congressional Prayer Despite Atheist Challenge
Congress will continue opening sessions in prayer after a challenge to the tradition by an atheist. A federal court ruled against the lawsuit brought by Daniel Barker, co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation.  Barker argued he was denied the opportunity to give an opening invocation in Congress while other guest chaplains were allowed to do so. U.S. District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer said in her decision that House rules didn't allow Barker to lead the prayer because he had left his faith.   LINK

Jim Newheiser: Helping Churches to Better Handle Cases of Abuse
Sadly, I have been witness to a discouraging pattern in local churches as they handle cases involving abuse. It begins as church leaders are made aware of a situation in which a husband is acting abusively towards his wife, and it has been going on for quite some time....Typically, church leaders get involved late in the situation because the victim is in fear of reporting her abuser, or perhaps thinks she is somehow to blame for his actions. Church leaders often initially treat these cases as typical marital conflict, treating the sins of each party in a more or less equal way. They fail to make a sufficient distinction between the....    LINK
....When Jesus says that the reason there will be no marriage in the resurrection is because no one dies, is he implying that the only reason marriage exists is to make babies, and raise children, and to replenish the earth? Owen Strachan: Jesus Did Not Die So You Could Be Cool
....In truth, we need not choose between pursuing beauty and glorifying God, as the neo-evangelicals understood. Sometimes even Christians buy this dichotomized vision of the arts, of culture-making, but we need not. Neither should we feel shame for using our gifts for the explicit purpose of praising the Lord and training the church’s eyes on excellency.      LINK
Star Parker: An Important New Step for Religious Freedom
Arguing for protection of religious freedom, the  Trump administration has opened the door for employers to withdraw from the Affordable Care Act mandate requiring them to provide birth control coverage at no cost to employees. H.B. Charles Jr: Seeing Beyond the Rubble of Ministry
.....This “rubble” was debris from the broken and burnt down walls of Jerusalem. It was in the workers’ way as they rebuilt the wall. But no one had dumped this trash on the construction site one evening as the workers slept. It had been there all along! In fact, the workers were halfway finished with the wall, in spite of the rubbish (Nehemiah 4:6). And still, they concluded there was too much rubble to complete the work. This is discouragement. It happens when you focus on the obstacles around you and ignore the opportunity in front of you... LINK
Phillip J. Long: How Did Christianity Come to Rome?
....The traditional view is the Roman church was founded by both Peter and Paul is rarely accept today. According to Eusebius, Peter followed the ach-heretic Simon the Sorcerer (Acts 8) to Rome in the second year of Claudius (A.D. 42). According to Eusebius, the Gospel Peter preached at this time was so well received the Roman people demanded a written copy, which became the Gospel of Mark, a tradition also found in Irenaeus.      LINK

Theological Matters: The New Marriage Battleground— Polygamy, Polyamory, and Open Marriage
Students who have taken my Christian Home class are familiar with a diagram I draw on the board each semester. In this diagram, I visually depict the difference between polygamy and polyamory—two marriage arrangements that contrast monogamy. I then tell my students that such arrangements will most likely be legal in the United States in just a matter of years and that the church will need to be prepared to address them. The time frame for normalization of these alternative marriages may have accelerated in recent months, as a series of articles have been published touting the advantages of various forms of multiple marriage. It is important for us to understand what these are and to critique them from a biblical perspective.  LINK

UK Telegraph: Oxford College Bans 'Harmful' Christian Union From Freshers' Fair
An Oxford College has banned the Christian Union from its freshers’ fair on the grounds that it would be “alienating” for students of other religions, and constitute a “micro-aggression”. The organiser of Balliol’s fair argued Christianity’s historic use as “an excuse for homophobia and certain forms of neo-colonialism” meant that students might feel “unwelcome” in their new college if the Christian Union had a stall. Freddy Potts, vice-president of Balliol’s Junior Common Room (JCR) committee, said that if a representative from the Christian Union (CU) attended the fair, it could cause "potential harm" to freshers. ... PJ Media: Dear Christian— Is Technology Conforming You to the Pattern of This World?
A well-known verse tells Christians, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2). Flipping the Apostle Paul's admonishment on its head, Christians are expected by the culture to look to the world for approval, cues, and specific direction on how to feel and what to think and even do. This is why preachers have long warned against the worldly influence of pop culture and, on the extreme end, addiction to drugs and alcohol. Similar cautions are now being raised about technology, specifically smartphones and social media. Except this time the warnings aren't coming from preachers but from the techies who helped develop smartphones and social media technologies.   LINK
ERLC: Why the Department of Justice’s Religious Liberty Guidance Matters
.....The free exercise of religion is America’s first freedom for a reason. A state that can pave over the conscience rights of any American’s beliefs is a state that can do anything. We welcome a continued substantive discussion about religious liberty, because we believe that religious liberty is in the best interest of all Americans.      LINK

Lifeway: A Rural Pastor’s Warning About Megachurches

But that isn’t the case with all large churches, not even megachurches. Yet, when we assume that it is, we participate in a form of soft persecution against the body of Christ, all the while assuming that our preferred brand of church is best.  I’ve been around a lot of small, rural churches. Some of these churches do all that they can to keep certain people out.    LINK

World Mag: Unmarried Christians Need the Church, and the Church Needs Unmarried Christians

Kit Johnson: Unity vs. Uniformity

Rachel Hicks: The Heart of Modesty
....So rather than getting dressed because we want to attract attention to ourselves, we dress in a way that would not distract from God being glorified. This can go to both extremes. We should not dress in a way that would draw negative attention and cause the focus to be on us or our bodies. We also don’t dress in the same long, brown garment every day because this would also bring the attention to us and away from God.    LINK
