CBN News: In Wake of Sutherland Springs Massacre, Law Aims to Fortify Churches in a Violent Culture
The mass shooting at a small Texas church late last year once again brings up the debate over church security. What's the best way to protect churches in today's violent culture?  CBN News spoke with a Texas lawmaker pushing a new law that allows church volunteers to become security guards. Going to church is supposed to be safe – a literal sanctuary where people meet God and find peace in a troubled world. That tranquil image has taken a beating after several shootings, including the one in Charleston, South Carolina, at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church in 2015, where nine people lost their lives during a Bible study. ...
J. Warner Wallace: Is Christianity Shrinking in America? 'Yes' and 'No'
It's a common question asked by church leaders and laity: "Is American Christianity waning as our nation becomes more secular"? The statistics seem to support a "yes" answer to this question. I've been collecting data on this issue for over ten years. The surveys (more than 50 I've chronicled so far) reveal a disturbing, albeit unified, trend: Fewer people claim a Christian affiliation than ever before, and those who claim no religious affiliation are the fastest growing group in America.....
Prophecy News Watch: Christians Debate Trumps Impact On Sharing Faith
.....With all respect to our president, and with my appreciation for the good things he has done, he did not die for my sins, and I have not staked my soul's salvation on his reputation. That distinction belongs to Jesus the Messiah, and to Jesus alone. Why the need to state something that is so totally self-evident? It's because evangelicals are being judged on the character and accomplishments of our president rather than on the character and accomplishments of our Lord, hence the need to remind a watching world that there is only one Savior, and His name is not Trump.....
Jean-Louis Gassée: Saving Our Children From Smartphones
...“Computers don’t just do things for us, they do things to us, including to our ways we think about ourselves and other people.” Computer scientists and psychologists have long voiced concerns that our inventions may have nefarious influence on our minds, especially during formative years. Late last year, Sean Parker, the serial tech entrepreneur and founding president of Facebook, voiced just such a concern as he “unloaded” on his former company: “[Social media] literally changes your relationship with society, with each other … It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains.” That brings us to today.....

Prophecy News Watch: China's Faith-Friendly Facade— What They Don't Want You to Know
To foreign Christians, China portrays itself as a free country. But Chinese Christians know better. There, they toured churches and celebrated news that within our lifetimes, China will be home to more Christians than any other nation on earth. And that's true.....

Stacey Hare: William Carey's Greatest Obstacle— The Local Church
.... in the year 1786, Carey raised the question whether the command given to the apostles to teach all nations was obligatory for them at that present time. Reading between the lines, an older man present at the meeting looked at him and said,  "Young man, sit down: when God pleases to convert the heathen he will do it without your aid or mine." In the words of biographer Daniel Webber, “The hyper-Calvinism of the day was more than capable of turning the sovereignty of God into a pretext for doing nothing.” The local church was thus one of the biggest obstacles that Carey faced in his pursuit of missions. But he would not relent. He continued to bring the plight of the nations before the church until at last his fellow ministers started to desire to see the nations worship Christ. ....
Christian Post: Southern Baptist Convention Added to Sexual Abuse Suit Against Former Judge Paul Pressler
The Southern Baptist Convention has been added as a defendant in a lawsuit alleging that former Texas state judge and lawmaker Paul Pressler sexually abused a former Bible study student he hired as a home office assistant for decades, starting when he was just 14 years old. The 15-million member organization was added to the lawsuit on Jan. 12 after it was initially filed in a Texas court on Oct. 18.......
Tim Challies: Seven Thoughts on the Billy Graham / Mike Pence Rule
.....(Definition: The Billy Graham/Mike Pence Rule establishes that a man will not put himself in situations in which he is alone with a woman who is not his wife.) The Billy Graham/Mike Pence Rule bubbles up on a regular basis as a discussion that usually seems to generate considerably more heat than light. To be frank, I don’t much care how unbelievers feel about it, but do care quite a lot about how Christians feel about it. Even more so, I care how they feel about those who do or do not hold to it. What follows are some of my thoughts.....

Taigen Joos: Five Ways to Encourage a Missions-Mindedness in Your Family
....One thing that has been on my mind is how to build into our church families more of a missions-mindedness. As a church body, we support several missionaries, which is good. We skype our missionaries, send them financial gifts from time to time, and do other things. But I am talking about individual families seeking to instill in each other more of a desire for outreach, both locally and globally. Here are some things I have thought of to encourage your family in this direction.....
David Cloud: A Bible Education at Your Fingertips
I am convinced that the equivalent of a Bible School education is the starting point for the child of God to begin to study the Bible effectually and to know and do God’s will. Christian Post: Artificial Intelligence, Transhumanism and the Church—  How Should Christians Respond?
As artificial intelligence and emerging technology continue to develop at breakneck speed, Christians have no choice but to engage given the staggering implications it's already having for ministry and the broader culture, scholars say. For many followers of Jesus, the explosive use of digital devices like smartphones and an ever-growing number of social media utilities are challenging enough to deal with, especially when it comes to raising children. As leaders in the tech industry place their own children in schools where technology is not available and even home use is discouraged, many are also increasingly concerned about a burgeoning, smartphone-fueled mental health crisis. But wholly rejecting or ignoring technology will only worsen conditions for everyone, according to.....

Tony Perkins: I Support Trump Because He Has Delivered, Not Because He’s a Role Model
If there’s one thing I’ve always said, it’s that Christians should never check their faith at the door when they enter the public square. So, let me start by practicing what I preach. Like you, I’ve heard all of the allegations about President Donald Trump’s past, his years of baggage and personal failings. I don’t pretend to know what’s true and what isn’t—certainly not now, in an environment as toxic as ours. But there is a truth I do know: Faith in Jesus Christ calls us to live with moral clarity in everything we do. And that means calling sin, sin...
Book Review: What Do We Do With the King James Version?
.....Ward begins with an excellent overview of what we stand to lose as the church stops using the KJV. We lose some of the intergenerational ties that bind us together; the kind of Scripture-memory by osmosis that happens when everyone quotes a common translation; a cultural touchstone that provides a source of common phrases and a form of distinctly religious communication; some of the implicit trust Christians have in the Bible as they now choose between a hundred competing translations; and even some of the implicit trust non-Christians have in the Bible. There is a cost to abandoning the KJV.....         PLEASE SEE EDITOR'S DISCLAIMER BELOW

Thomas Overmiller: Lessons in Evangelism from Old Testament Israel
As we learn to be a witness for the gospel, we give a lot of attention to what we say and how we say it. This is important because you cannot be a witness for the gospel without giving people the message of the gospel in a clear and accurate way (Rom 10:17). But in addition to the message that we share, we must also consider the life that we present to the world as the backdrop to the message. Scripture emphasizes this aspect of our role as witnesses. In fact, this is not a NT phenomenon. You can trace it back to the OT nation of Israel....
Marshall Segal: How Christian Is Self-Improvement?
.....Self-improvement feels so exhilarating, so hopeful, so liberating — at least in theory (or in Nike ads). But resolutions can become Band-Aids we slap on to avoid really deepening our relationship with Jesus. We feel like better Christians, even though we’re no closer to Christ, and therefore no closer to addressing the heart behind our restlessness, insecurity, and guilt. So, what role, if any, does self-improvement play in the Christian life? Is there anything distinctly Christian about self-improvement?....

Several peers from the victim school also joined.

.;..Study: Progressive and Liberal US Churches Are Shrinking, Fundamental and Nondenominational American Christians Are Growing  -Christian Journal
Christians are tired of hearing watered down teachings, instead, according to a recently published study, people of America are turning to Churches that stand on the Word of God. Globally speaking, people are, according to similar studies, turning away from religion and faith based on what is explained as the secularization thesis. In summary, the thesis reads that “as societies progress, particularly through modernization and rationalization, religion loses its authority in all aspects of social life and governance.” However, that is not taking place in America, in fact, it’s quite the opposite.
..;..Pence In Jerusalem Ends Israel's Obama Era Nightmare   -Prophecy News Watch
In the tradition of giving a special blessing to foreigners who come to Jerusalem and acknowledge the Jewish roots of the city, Vice President Mike Pence has certainly earned such a benediction. His historic speech to the Knesset on Jan. 22, 2018, showed a deep and compassionate understanding of the despair and triumph of our people from their dispersion from the city in 70 A.D. by the Romans to the reunification of the city in 1967. Few world leaders have had the courage to acknowledge Jewish history in this way and to embrace the Jewish future of Jerusalem by understanding it as inextricably bound to our past.

..;..Massive Study Finds Link Between High Screen Time and Unhappiness-Intellectual Takeout
We’d all like to be a little happier.  The problem is that much of what determines happiness is outside of our control. Some of us are genetically predisposed to see the world through rose-colored glasses, while others have a generally negative outlook. Bad things happen, to us and in the world. People can be unkind, and jobs can be tedious. But we do have some control over how we spend our leisure time. That’s one reason why it’s worth asking which leisure time activities are linked to happiness, and which aren’t. In a new analysis of 1 million U.S. teens, my co-authors and I looked at how teens were spending their free time and which activities correlated with happiness, and which didn’t. We wanted to see if changes in the way teens spend their free time might partially explain a startling drop in teens’ happiness after 2012 – and perhaps the decline in adults’ happiness since 2000 as well.

Moody Bible Institute is one of the oldest Bible colleges in the nation. Recently, the school has been called into question after allegations surfaced that there is a pervasive if subtle culture of racist attitudes on campus. Several former African-American students shared their stories. One, identified as Micah Bournes, said that overall, neither faculty or other students ever tried to be more inclusive of minorities on campus. Furthermore, when Bournes read that the college’s student handbook “didn’t allow students to have what it called extreme or distracting hairstyles that included cornrows and dreadlocks,” he took this issue up with the Dean. Since cornrows and dreadlocks are almost exclusively hairstyles worn by Black people....

The influenza virus that’s sickened millions of Americans this season is already the most widespread outbreak since public health authorities began keeping track more than a dozen years ago. Now, with the threat of more strains emerging, it might get even worse. “Flu is everywhere in the U.S. right now,” said Dan Jernigan, director of the influenza division at the national Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “This is the first year we have had the entire continental U.S. be the same color on the graph, meaning there is widespread activity in all of the continental U.S. at this point.”  The most optimistic assumption among government experts is that the season peaked a few weeks ago, marking the apex of what was already an early and severe outbreak. However, such an outlook requires observers to ignore that outpatient doctor visits have continued to climb  in the first week of 2018, yielding the most flu cases ever for this time of the year.

..;..Preparing for a Cultural Winter In American Christianity-Carl Trueman
The Bob Jones precedent could easily lead to the revocation of tax-exempt status for schools committed to traditional views of marriage and sexual morality...Christian institutions [need] to wean themselves off of government money as soon as possible. Given the financial significance that the federal student loan system has for most colleges, this process will be painful and difficult for many, where it is possible at all. Yet it is vital. The complexity that federal loans bring to the relationship between private institutions and the government is such that the whole notion of a public accommodation is now potentially far more extensive than could have been imagined a generation or two ago. And that means that the First Amendment, far from being a friend of Christian colleges and confessional seminaries, might prove to be the very opposite. If you take government money, what right do you have to restrict speech on your campus in accordance with your own religious convictions?

..;.Does Jeremiah 29:11 Apply to You?   -Russell Moore
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” These words are the John 3:16 of American cultural Christianity. Watch how often they show up on the Bible verse plaques sold in Bible Belt mall kiosks or posted on Facebook walls, even on tattoos. Whether as home decor or on social media posts, I see this passage claimed fervently by people I know haven’t been in a church service since the first Bush administration. Naturally, this love for Jeremiah 29:11 has often led more theologically oriented Christians to lament its out-of-context use. So much so that a young Christian recently asked me, “Does Jeremiah 29:11 apply to me, or not?”

..;.Is God a Good Father?-Dan DeWitt
If God is really our father, as he says in the Bible, if he really loves us like a father, or as Jesus tells us, more than earthly fathers, then surely his love is amazing, his acceptance total, and his care reliable. I love my children. I would do anything for them. But can God really love me like that—more than that? This is one of those truths that our hearts—with all our jacked up human experiences—just cannot seem to accept. For some, comparing God’s love to that of an earthly father is more painful than promising, more destructive than inspiring. This must be some kind of trick.

..;.Thoroughly Human Thinking  -Andrew Hudson
The fall of mankind into sin has caused corruption to human thinking (Titus 1:15). This is evidenced by the repeated appeals in the New Testament for believers to renew their thinking (Rom. 12:2; Col. 3:10). This raises the question, “What is fallen man’s thinking like?” The answer to this question is multifaceted.  Fallen man is unable to understand spiritual truth (Rom. 3:11; 1 Cor. 2:14). Fallen man is susceptible to the deception of the Devil (Rev. 13:14). Fallen man considers Biblical truth foolish and mocks those who believe it (1 Cor. 2:14; Jude 18). Fallen man elevates his own thinking over the truth of the Bible (Rom. 1:21–23; 12:3).

..;..Reconsidering Your Approach to Evangelism  -T. Overmiller
God entrusts the ministry of evangelism to every believer. It is the way that he has chosen to spread the message of life and redemption to a lost and dying world. Yet how many believers faithfully participate in this crucial endeavor? Do you? In Matthew 9:37, Jesus taught that the great challenge of evangelism is recruiting people to do the work. He said, “The laborers are few.” Nevertheless, God commands us to proclaim the good news of salvation in Christ. Therefore, you should be committed to compassionate evangelism...You should be committed to compassionate evangelism, without discrimination, through your life, to your community and to the world. To encourage this participation, I would like to offer a simple definition of evangelism. Then I hope to correct some wrong perspectives that believers may subtly embrace, followed by excuses we often make for why we don’t get involved. Then I would offer some good reasons for getting involved and a basic strategy for doing so.

..;..Seduced By a Comfortable Life   -Go There For
Most people would agree that living in places like Australia or the United States means having a pretty comfortable life. Most of us reading this are affluent compared to global averages, and have privileges that other people around the world only dream of. These are good gifts from God, given out of his kindness and grace, and we ought to thank him for them. But has it become too much of a good thing? Is it possible that some of us have become too comfortable? Think about your daily life: your routines, your habits, and your thought patterns. Are you mindful of God? Does he feature in your thoughts throughout the day, or just when you sit down to do your quiet time? Where is he on your daily priority list? In my life, I have noticed an unhealthy pattern. When things are hard the difficult situation makes me cry out to God for help and serves to remind me how dependent I am on him.   But when things are going well I am quick to forget what I learned in the hard times, and leave behind that closeness and reliance on God that I enjoyed.

.....The “Judeo-Christian ethos” teaches that sex is for marriage and the conception of children.  Sexual actions outside of that context are immoral. But if that ethos is dismissed and we are not allowed to consider the morality of sexual actions, we are left with less certain subjective criteria.  In re-moralizing sex, “consent” becomes the primary consideration:  If both parties consent to sexual actions, then they have no moral content.  But if one or both does not consent, that makes the action evil.  And so it does, but “consent” can be manipulated or coerced.

In our Christian lives, we often encounter experiences we can’t explain. Recently I had a dream that surprised me and left me wondering about its significance. What’s happened to the fear of God behind the pulpit and in society? More people are living as if there is no God, so what happens when the fear of God is missing?  The fear of God is not completely understood by those outside of the church, but even some in the church.
