Joe Carter: Nine Things You Should Know About the Creation of Modern Israel
On Wednesday and Thursday, the modern state of Israeli celebrated the 70th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence. Here are nine things you should know about the creation of the modern Israeli state. 1. In AD 138, the ancient nation of Israel ceased to exist when the Roman emperor Hadrian crushed the Bar Kochba revolt and banned all Jews from Palestine (i.e., the biblical regions known as the Land of Israel). The land was conquered by various nations until 1517, when it was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans retained control until 1917, when the British captured Jerusalem during World War I.....LINK
Governing: Loneliness May Be a Bigger Public Health Threat Than Smoking or Obesity
Since stepping down as surgeon general in April of last year, Vivek Murthy has turned his attention to what he considers to be America’s fastest-growing public health crisis. No, it isn’t cardiovascular diseases or obesity or smoking or even the nation’s system of health-care delivery. Murthy is taking on a more unlikely cause: loneliness. “During my years caring for patients, the most common pathology I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness,” Murthy wrote in the Harvard Business Review in 2017.....LINK
Pew Forum: When Americans Say They Believe in God, What Do They Mean?
Virtually all U.S. Christians say they believe in God or a higher power of some kind. Among evangelical Protestants, 91% put their faith in God “as described in the Bible,” as do 92% of those in the historically black Protestant tradition. Most Catholics and mainline Protestants also believe in the God of the Bible, though sizable minorities within these groups say they believe in some other higher power or spiritual force.....LINK
New Atlas: Electronics 3D-Printed Onto Human Skin

CBN News: 'Singing Jesus Loves Me': Waffle House Victim Died Singing Gospel Songs
A young woman who was killed in the attack by a gunman last week in a Tennessee Waffle House died singing gospel songs, according to CNN.  Walt Ehmer, the restaurant chain's CEO, spoke at the funeral of DeEbony Groves held at the First Baptist Church in Gallatin Saturday. He shared with the audience what a survivor of the April 22 attack at the Antioch restaurant told him. Groves, 21, and her friend were singing gospel songs....LINK
NY Times: Inside Southwest Flight 1380, 20 Minutes of Chaos and Terror
....“I grabbed my wife’s hand and I started praying: ‘Dear Jesus, send some angels. Just save us from this,’” said Timothy C. Bourman, 36, a pastor from Woodside, N.Y., who was on his way to a church retreat in San Antonio. “I thought we were goners.” .....Pastor Bourman said he could not figure out how to use his mask, and decided it would not save him if the plane crashed. Instead, he sat and prayed as his wife, Amanda, managed to connect her phone to the plane’s Wi-Fi. They began texting Pastor Bourman’s father to tell him what had happened and to convey a message to the couple’s three daughters, 6, 4 and 2 years old:  Pray.  Plane blew an engine.  We are going to try to land. Tell the girls we love them and that Jesus is with them always........LINK

CBN News: House Chaplain Fired, A First in History of US Congress
Irate Democrats erupted Friday over House Speaker Paul Ryan's move to oust the House chaplain, saying Ryan hasn't offered any explanation and charging that Rev. Patrick Conroy's political leanings contributed to his dismissal.  Ryan told Republican lawmakers in a closed-door meeting that he forced Conroy out because he wasn't doing a very good job tending to the pastoral needs of lawmakers and that lawmakers had brought concerns to him. But Ryan's office won't say why Conroy was asked to resign and he hasn't told rank-and-file Democrats why. It would be the first forced ouster of a chaplain in the history of the House.....LINK
Jordan Standridge: Five Reasons Why Pope Francis’ Answer Was Demonic
....Videos like these make me cry. I’m not talking symbolically here...I say that to help you understand that there is no hate here (maybe a little for the Pope). I hate false religion and I despise false teachers. I can’t stand the thought of these people going to hell, and I’m thankful for the Gospel in my life, and that I have the ability to share it with the world. Now allow me to answer a question a friend asked me: is what the pope said actually demonic? Sure, it is false teaching, but can you actually call it demonic?....LINK
Bloomberg Viewpoint: The Ugly Coded Critique of Chick-Fil-A's Christianity
....What the author really seems angry about is that the company’s CEO opposes same-sex marriage. But the framing of the piece made Christianity the villain, and the headline -- was sufficiently troubling that Nate Silver quickly tweeted “This is why Trump won.” Fair point. Religious bigotry is always dangerous. But there’s a deeper problem here, a difficulty endemic to today’s secular left: an all-too-frequent weird refusal to acknowledge the demographics of Christianity. When you mock Christians, you’re not mocking who you think you are.....LINK

Tim Challies: The Best Argument for Using a Printed Bible
I admit it: I use an electronic Bible. Better said, I use an electronic device that has a Bible app installed on it. Several years ago I put away my printed Bible in favor of Logos on my iPad....Yet in this year of worldwide travel for that church history project I’m calling EPIC, I’ve been challenged to return to a printed Bible. What’s the best argument? Instead of telling you, let me show you.......LINK
Aaron Blumer: Autonomy, Ethics Scandals, and the Madness of Crowds
When faced with ethical misconduct scandals, are churches, or any other organizations, obligated to involve outside investigators? Should the volume and fervor of public outcry guide an organization’s response to ethics scandals? I hope to be somewhat persuasive in answering these questions, but mostly I want to be clear. With that in mind, I’ve structured my thoughts here debate style. In response to purely ethical scandals, organizations should not view themselves as obligated to involve any third parties; further, they should not attach significance to.......LINK
Rebecca McLaughlin: Why I Don’t Sit With My Husband at Church

Randy Alcorn: Heaven Would Be Hell Without God
.....Numerous people claim to have gone to heaven and seen loved ones and even Jesus, yet almost never do they react as the beloved disciple, the apostle John, did: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead” (Revelation 1:17). Surely no one who had actually been in heaven would neglect to mention what Scripture shows is its main focus. If you had spent an evening dining with a king, you wouldn’t just talk about the place settings. When John was shown heaven and wrote about it, he recorded the details — but first and foremost, from beginning to end, he kept talking about Jesus, the Lion and the Lamb, with infinite gravitas and beauty. ...LINK
Erik Reid: Pastors & Churches— Don’t Celebrate Brokenness
Have you noticed the latest buzz word tossed around Christian circles?  Brokenness. Listen, and you will hear it. Songs in worship gatherings and on Christian radio contain it. Churches use it on their websites to describe their culture to potential visitors. Pastors and leaders stand on stage and explain how broken they are and how their church is a place for broken people....Brokenness has never been so popular.  ....LINK
Nicholas T. Batzig: God’s Metrics
God’s metrics are not our metrics. The way in which we seek to measure fruitfulness and faithfulness is often quite skewed....The fruitfulness of a Gospel ministry is never observed in total in the here and now. The one who waters the seed of God’s word in men and women’s lives may see the increase, while the one who sowed the seed may not. The one who planted and the one who watered may never see the increase, but a future generation may see it. God may chose to delay fruit until some later period in an individual’s life. The fruit may appear on........LINK
Forward: Jewish Mystics Hope Trump’s Israel Visit Might ‘Raise The Temple’
Donald Trump’s transformation from real estate mogul and reality TV star to president reads like a strange American fairytale. Dogged by controversy, with no political experience, Trump is now the most powerful person in the world. To some, his triumph was so unlikely that there was only one way to explain in — God played a part. Some mystically-inclined Jews see Trump as a sort of divine instrument. Within Israel’s controversial Temple Mount movement, which seeks to build the Third Temple in the center of Jerusalem’s Old City, Trump has found vocal advocates who see him not simply as a political ally, but as something more. “President Trump can choose to be a part of a process to bring the Messiah,” Rabbi Hillel Weiss told Breaking Israel News, a religious website in Israel. Now, with Trump’s visit to Israel Monday, members of the Temple Mount movement are hoping that Trump will endorse their project.....LINK
Christian Post: Christian Publisher— Google Blocked Our Ads Over Jesus, Bible References
The head of a Lutheran publishing house has claimed Google will no longer accept advertisements related to the organization's website "because of the faith we express." USA Today: GQ Magazine Puts Bible on List of Classic Books Not Worth Reading, Incurs the Wrath of Christians
Well, it appears this group of scribes won’t be greeted very warmly at the Pearly Gates. GQ magazine, a bible of “grooming” tips, gadget suggestions and style advice, has sparked a social media conflagration by calling the Christian Holy Bible “foolish, repetitive and contradictory” and placing it on a list of “21 Books You Don’t Have to Read.” “The Holy Bible is rated very highly by all the people who supposedly live by it but who in actuality have not read it,” novelist Jesse Ball writes in the magazine. “Those who have read it know there are some good parts, but overall it is certainly not the finest thing that man has ever produced.”....LINK

SBC Today: Two Racial Reconciliation Philosophies—  Replacing the Skin Color Approach with Character Content Approach
....Perhaps the most insidious assumption by those advocating the Skin Color Approach is that those of us favoring the Character Content Approach are somehow in favor of racism. Just because a person has a problem with the idea of white privilege and white guilt does not mean that they favor racism. They simply have a different method for dealing with racism than those embracing the Skin Color Approach. ....LINK

A California bill with the aim of banning Christian books and resources which address issues of homosexuality and gender identity could pass in the California Senate as soon as late May, sources told CBN News.  Assembly Bill 2943 declares biblical books and Christian conferences dealing with biblical views on homosexuality or transgenderism as fraudulent, under the state's consumer fraud statute. Rod Dreher: Why Christians Vote Republican Despite It All
....On Monday night at a dinner in Miami, I told a liberal journalist sitting next to me that I would love to vote for a Democrat as a way of bringing the Republican Party back to its senses, but that it is impossible for a conservative Christian like me to vote Democratic, because I am the Enemy to the Democratic Party. It’s all about religious liberty. I am convinced — beyond convinced — that there is no religious liberty that the Democrats would not smash in an effort to advance whatever the LGBT activist leadership wants. ....LINK

The tragic news out of the U.K. regarding little Alfie Evans is more than just tragic. It’s chilling. A child will be killed, perhaps in a few hours, perhaps today, or tomorrow. Once again, the wishes of the parents are being disregarded and their rights as parents trampled. And a child is going to be killed.....LINK

Christianity Today: Creepy Chick-fil-A and New York(er) Values— The Shock (and Slander) Are Getting Old
A few days ago, an article  in The New Yorker discussing the “infiltration” of a certain fast food brand throughout Manhattan: Chick-fil-A.  The headline says they are creepy... But, Chick-fil-a is run by evangelicals who hold evangelical beliefs, which makes all the difference...But Chick-fil-A isn’t just all fun and fried food. They’re committed to serving people—their employees and guests—well, and with integrity. As founder S. Truett Cathy famously said, “We should be about more than just selling chicken. We should be a part of our customers’ lives and the communities in which we serve.” Their corporate purpose, as The New Yorker breathlessly writes, is to “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A.”  Oh no.  Not that. Not in New York.....LINK
Christian Post: Inside the Houston Church Barbara Bush Attended and Where Her Funeral Took Place
Barbara Bush's funeral Saturday put the church she attended in the international spotlight. Bush, the wife and mother of presidents, was a cradle Episcopalian. Together with her husband, George H.W. The casual observer watching the funeral on television may have thought St. Martin's was a cathedral, perhaps because of the soaring architecture. Ed Stetzer: It's Time to End the 'Stupid' About the End Times— Debunking Christian Numerology
Self-proclaimed Christian numerologist David Meade is at it again. This time, though, he’s saying that the world is going to end on April 23rd...He’s predicted that the world would end not once, but twice already this year. Again, before getting into a tizzy and starting to think that maybe this could finally be the real deal, I want you to notice something: we’re all still here. But this is causing embarrassment to those of us who actually seek to understand and have faith in what scripture actually tells us about the end times. Meade is a fake expert in a fake field proclaiming another fake event. And, it’s time for the news media to stop covering the same person making the same fake claim over and over.....LINK
Aaron Berry: How to Have Personal Standards Without Being a Legalist
.....I recognize that some of you might come from a legalistic background where personal standards were the sole measure of spirituality and pastors were “teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matt 15:9). Please don’t let your experience sour your attitude toward the value of having personal standards. You desperately need to set standards in your life. Why? Because your heart is deceitful. You need guardrails in your life because you like to sin. The presence of standards doesn’t mean that you’re a good person; it means you recognize that you’re a sinful person (Phil 1:10, 27; 2:15; Titus 2:12; 1 Cor 9:27; Col 1:10).....LINK

Joel Wiggin: Christianity In a Polarized America
.....It is worth asking the question, “Why do we live in such a polarized society?” and “Why do Christians so willingly fall into it’s trap?” I believe the answer is simple. This current age and our current society struggles with a deep lack of humility. The reasons for this are not as important as our ability to recognize it, but it likely has a something to do with the self aggrandized, self-important, social media slathered world we live in. ...LINK
Jordan Standridge: Two Lessons from Two Radically Different Funerals
Funerals are a gift from God. I know that sounds crazy, but they are a God-given tool to force us to reflect on the brevity of life, and how finite we are as human beings. I had the privilege of attending two recently, and they could not have been more different from each other.....LINK
American Conservative:The Collapse of Manners

John Hawkins: Seven Forces Driving America Toward Civil War
I was interviewed by a mainstream media reporter yesterday. I thought he wanted to talk tech issues, but we actually spent almost the entire conversation discussing the feeling that many conservatives have that America has gone off the tracks and is headed toward dissolution or alternately, a civil war one day. Obviously, this would be a terrible thing and ironically, twenty years ago, it would have been laughable. Today, the joke isn’t so funny because we are a deeply unhealthy society with a dysfunctional government and for all our money, success and storied history, we seem to be on an increasingly dangerous trajectory. ....LINK

CBN News: Churches Fight Atheist Lawsuit that Could Result in $1 Billion In Taxes On Church Leaders
For nearly six decades, religious leaders have enjoyed a housing tax exemption from the IRS. But one atheist organization says no more. The Freedom From Religion Foundation is fighting to strip that tax break in a move that would mean churches across the country would be socked with almost $1 billion in new taxes. Supporters say the provision, known as the "parsonage exemption," allows pastors, rabbis and others to live in the communities they serve. In Gaylor v. Mnuchin, FFRF is suing the IRS and charging the provision actually violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The case kicked off this past week in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Pastors like Chicago's Chris Butler told the federal appeals court Thursday that taking away the tax break would be a big blow to both the leaders and the community...LINK

Mercury News: The Supervolcano Under Yellowstone Should Make You Worried
Yellowstone has been a national park since 1872, but it was only in the 1960s that scientists realized the scale of the volcano – it’s 44 miles across – and not until the 1980s did they grasp that this thing is fully alive and still threatens to erupt catastrophically. Yellowstone is capable of eruptions thousands of times more violent than the Mount St. Helens eruption of 1980. The northern Rockies would be buried in multiple feet of ash. Ash would rain on almost everyone in the United States. It’d be a bad day. Thus geologists are eager to understand what, exactly, is happening below all those volcano-fueled hot springs and geysers.....LINK

National Review: Understanding the Mind of Modern Atheists
"....Bullies are usually cruel, arrogant, ignorant, intolerant, selfish, self-centered, often cowards and liars — and when you try to correct them, they usually throw temper tantrums. Well, that’s the perfect description of modern atheists. And these particular bullies are at war with us, plain and simple. For the last 20 years, they’ve been waging an all-out, media-driven attack on believers — especially Christians — in the form of anti-Christian books, movies, TV shows, articles, speeches, billboard campaigns, blogs, anti-religious civil litigation, and government legislation — and it’s been relentless. Their goal has been to totally eradicate religious beliefs from the public square. ....LINK
